February Dinner Meeting

  • Twin Trees Too 1029 Milton Avenue Syracuse, NY, 13204 United States (map)

REGISTER TODAY!

Join us for our February Dinner Meeting at Twin Trees Too on February 21st! Our speaker this month will be Dan Lang of Arcadis, who will provide an overview of key issues relating to a class of emerging contaminants that are gaining widespread media attention – Poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The presentation will discuss the sources of these contaminants, current and evolving regulatory framework, fate and transport behavior to enable development of preliminary assessments and site investigation programs.  This discussion will also include a review of the state of the practice for drinking water treatment and soil and groundwater remediation, including a discussion on the current gaps and needs for future improvements. PFOA and PFOS are/were used in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) in firefighting at federal and commercial facilities world-wide.  PFOA and PFOS were also widely used in industrial and commercial applications such as oil and water resistant coatings, mist suppressants, and semi-conductor manufacture.  The widespread occurrence of PFOA and PFOS in the environment has led to impacts at public drinking water supplies, which has heightened public awareness, especially following the drinking water issues at Flint, Michigan.

Dan Lang, PHG

Dan Lang, PHG is an Associate Vice President with Arcadis in Clifton Park, New York (Albany Area).  He has 23 years of consulting experience as a hydrogeologist, groundwater modeler, and project manager. He serves as the Community of Practice Leader for Conceptual Site Models in Arcadis’ Hydrogeology Discipline.  Dan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Rochester and a Master’s Degree in Hydrogeology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dan’s experience with PFOA/PFOS began with the Village of Hoosick Falls NY site, where PFOA was detected in the village wellfield and in private wells in the surrounding town of Hoosick. Working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Dan helped build a team to assist the State with initial response actions, including drinking water sampling, bench-scale treatment tests, and installation of Point of Entry Treatment Systems (POETs). He currently is a senior technical advisor for a related NYSDEC assignment: an alternate water supply study for Hoosick Falls. Dan has also recently managed feasibility studies evaluating different remedial approaches for PFOA/PFOS in groundwater.
